Chapter 11

Here, There or Where?

The following morning, when Marcus still hadn’t appeared for breakfast, Tatiana banged loudly on his door. ‘You’ve got to get up, Marcus – now.’

‘I can’t.’

‘Why not? Are you sick?’ she asked, prodding the mound under the duvet.

‘No. I had a nightmare and I’m exhausted!’ he said, burrowing deeper under the quilt.

‘Oh, just a dream.’

‘It wasn’t just a dream, it was important.’

‘Okay, so an important one, but we have to go to the country soon, so you’d better get up,’ she said, going to the door.

‘No, stop,’ he called. ‘We have to go back to the Catacombs today – I dreamt the children hadn’t gone.’

Tatiana swivelled, hands on hips. ‘Grand-père and Mum have arranged the trip for today, and he hates having his plans altered, so get dressed. We’ll see about the children tomorrow.’

‘But we must—’

‘Marcus, after two hundred years of being stuck, one more day isn’t going to make any difference,’ she snapped.

‘Tati, what’s the matter?’

‘Nothing.’

‘There is,’ he said, emerging from under the bedclothes. ‘I can tell, you’re all spiky.’

‘No I’m not. I’m fine.’

‘Come off it, Tati, you know you’re not,’ he said, in a gentler tone.

‘I told them about Granny and the tie,’ she said, kicking at a trainer lying on the floor. ‘I should have kept my mouth shut because now Grand-père’s gone ominously quiet, Mum’s mad at me, and you’re making it worse by not getting up, and it seems that’s my fault too!’

Marcus noticed her brimming eyes. ‘Why didn’t you say so before, instead of spitting at me?’

‘What’s the point? It was my fault.’

‘No it wasn’t, I would have done the same.’

‘Grand-père didn’t say anything, but his jaw was tightly clenched and he looked so mournful. Mum was furious that I’d upset him, said it was bad for his heart and might make him ill again.’

‘Don’t worry, it’ll blow over.’

‘But Mum accused me of making things up, lying. She said I was fantasising, that it was all in my mind,’ she said, biting her lip.

Marcus swung his legs out of bed and taking Tatiana in his arms, gave her a quick hug.

‘Forget it, Tati.’

‘Hurry and get dressed then … and I can’t wait to hear about your nightmare. I really mean it,’ she murmured, giving his shoulder an encouraging squeeze.

Marcus beamed. ‘Give me two minutes and I’ll be ready’
